Our Story
Our first candlelighting ceremony, gathered under a tent around a folding table, in 2018
The Illumination story begins with a folding table.
In January 2018, Illumination Community Outreach began with a folding table, a few volunteers, and a simple desire to show up for people in need. By May, a determined Board had secured formal nonprofit approval.
That small beginning grew into years of sharing meals, clothing, resources, prayer, and presence with neighbors facing homelessness and hardship across Philadelphia and the surrounding counties. Along the way, we partnered with like-minded organizations to extend the work and reach more people.
The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. - John 1:5
The Work Evolves
2018-2019 | A Folding Table
Illumination Community Outreach began with a folding table, a few volunteers, and a desire to show up for people in need. Our early work focused on addiction, homelessness, and street outreach. Brightness Bags became one of our signature ways to serve. Each bag included simple essentials like a flashlight, bottled water, socks, and snacks. Small things, but often exactly what someone needed in the moment. We brought food, clothing, prayer, and practical support directly to people and formalized our mobile outreach program.
As more people learned about the outreach, we began to hear from more families struggling with food insecurity, clothing needs, housing instability, and financial hardship. Our work expanded with them, through referrals and meeting needs directly. Hunger relief and clothing security became a larger part of our focus, along with helping families connect with resources and support.
2020–2021 | When the World Shut Down, We Stepped Up
The pandemic disrupted almost everything, but the need only grew. We continued serving families, responding to emergency requests, distributing food and clothing, and finding ways to stay connected when many resources became harder to access.
We took the work wherever it needed to go. We set up clothing pantries and food banks on lawns, under tents at the local Veterans' home, and on city sidewalks.
2022–2023 | The Table Extends: Practical Compassion Through Partnership
By then, the work had taken many forms. Resource Days, meals, seasonal outreach, Christmas events, emergency assistance, and Brightness Bags gave us different ways to respond. We were blessed to partner with Royersford Church of the Nazarene to set up a four room free center with clothing, food, hygiene items, and diapers.
We also learned how quickly circumstances could change. When floods displaced families or apartment fires left people without basic necessities, we mobilized. Volunteers gathered supplies, connected resources, and put boots on the ground.
Partnerships became central to the work. Churches, businesses, civic groups, schools, volunteers, and other nonprofits helped us reach farther than we ever could alone.
2024 | A Season of Transition
We continued serving while recognizing that the work had entered a season of change. After years of direct outreach, we began asking what the next chapter should look like and what the years behind us had taught us.
The answer did not come all at once. We kept serving, listening, praying, and paying attention.
2025 | One Chapter Closes. Another Begins.
In October, we concluded our outreach through one of our longest-running partnerships in Philadelphia. Illumination Community Outreach then moved toward closure.
Three Board members, including Illumination's founder, believed the calling to serve had not ended. Together, they formed Illumination Foundation as a new nonprofit organization with a renewed mission and explicitly Christian foundation.
The structure changed. The heart of the work did not.
2026 | Shining Light Together
Today, Illumination Foundation carries forward what years of direct service taught us. We still believe in showing up and meeting practical needs. We also learned that we can do more when we work alongside people and organizations already serving their communities well.
Our focus now includes Brightness Bags, community partnerships, and investment in local organizations doing meaningful work through microgrants and coaching.
The organization changed but the calling to show up, serve, and shine light remained.
The Illumination story continues.
The Light has Held
Each year, we gathered by candlelight to remember, pray, celebrate the people and stories that shaped us, and carry the light forward.
